![]() ![]() ![]() You will see Lifeblood Cacoons that give you losable extra masks, don’t worry, there are plenty more throughout Hallownest. It takes four Mask Shards to upgrade your health bar and three Soul Vessel fragments to upgrade your maximum Soul capacity.Īs you get to Dirtmouth, you will already have learned everything you need to know for you to continue for now – which is hitting everything that moves, collecting the Geo and Soul, repeat. Every three hits are one mask of healing (without any Soul charm equipped), and both your health bar and the Soul Vessel are upgradable. Elementary, my Dear Pale SonsĪs you already noticed, you have five health masks and a Soul Vessel to heal. This Hollow Knight getting started guide will go through and explain every mechanic in Hollow Knight and a tad more. This Hollow Knight Starter guide will help you out with this one. What my time with the game has made me realise, is that I would throw money at a game that had the gameplay mechanics of Ori, but the scale and map design of Hollow Knight. If you started playing Hollow Knight and got out of the Forgotten Crossroads trying to get into Greenpath, but an Elder Baldur stopped you. I'll stick to watching speedruns of the game when they come up instead. I get that it's in the name of atmosphere, but for me, too much fun has been sacrificed in it's name. If a save anywhare mod ever gets created, then I'll give it another whirl, but that's the only thing that could get me back into the game. I just don't have the gaming time available to grind out this stuff if I have to spend more time repeatedly getting to a task that actually doing it. ![]() The save points are not nearly common enough, the map thing is not a problem by itself, but irritating enough to compound the other issues, and the money held by shade thing when you die seems to exist for no other reason than a 'lol, fuck you' from the designers if you happen to die a second time (found this out the hard way). My hands are not thanking me for my devotion to it. The only potential downside is that it's holy-shit hard. I wasn't truly in love with it until I realized that Northernlion, whose playthrough I've been watching as I pass where he was at, was fighting a boss I didn't even realize existed, when I already knew two other different areas neither of us had touched.Īnd I'm given to understand this is 20+ hours long, so the Momodora problem (amazing game that closes off exploration too quickly because of its short runtime) isn't in evidence. In terms of openness it may be the most impressive metroidvania ever. Even with basic movement it feels great, the pacing of movement powerups is perfect, and the first two I found opened things up exactly as much as they should - not as much as I wanted (double jump when!) but as much as I needed, and the hunger for that true double jump burns whenever I'm not playing. The combat is also slightly sub-Momodora (or sub-Souls), mostly because of the lack of a dodge roll, but still extremely fun. The bosses have not yet been quite Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight level, but probably on par with Order of Ecclesia. The save points are at least close to the bosses (contrast with Souls, this game's closest relative, where they're varying distances and often quite far). The map issue has, at least post-patch, not been a problem. Had the chance to sit down with this further and, yeah, so far I'm inclined to say best metroidvania I've ever played. ![]()
